Kendall Wanderers Over 40s 1 - 0 Arlington Fossils

The O40s took on the Arlington Fossils full of confidence after their big opening win, and with the opposition looking very shaky in the opening minutes, it looked like another comfortable win was on the cards. Returning gaffer Johnny Kilpatrick and new signing Pete Smith had early chances following defensive lapses but were still shaking the winter rust off and were unable to convert. Kendall dominated first half possession thanks to a solid back line of Noel McDonough and Kendall veterans McCormack, McCormack and Roche but further chances were hard to come by until the ref awarded a generous penalty for Barry Roche being impeded in the 6 yard box as the ball swung in. Roche himself stepped up to stroke the penalty home. 1-0 at the break.

Arlington came out much stronger in the second half and were able to control the midfield with good passing and movement. Kendall lost Collie Hamell to a hamstring injury which did not help. It looked like we had made the game safe though when Chris Craven pulled back a cross from the left for Johnny KIlpatrick to guide home with a solid header, only for the ref to inexplicably rule it out for offside. The cross was backwards and Killer was behind his marker. Perhaps a make-up call for the earlier generous penalty.

Arlington were spurred on by their reprieve and we looked nervous for the final few minutes. Mike McCormack added to the family's long history of yellow cards and so was somewhat restrained but Roche alongside him was always in the right place at the right time and the game ended with a towering defensive header from the Dubliner.

2 wins from 2 and top of the league.
