As is untypical of a league kick off Sunday in April, the Kendall over 30 A’s (who have not been renamed 'Route' One Direction in honor of Keano's favorite boyband) were greeted by beautiful sunshine in Madison Park to begin the spring season against the recently promoted and modestly named International Allstars. Even stranger than the weather, to break with tradition, it seemed as if at least half the squad were not suffering from various Saturday night misadventures, apart from a certain Donegal man who was still wearing his Axel Rose outfit and couldn’t stop going on about hanging out with 22 year old’s in Tua Nua only hours earlier.

Some changes to the A’s this year both off and on the field with Darren ‘ACL’ Skehan assuming the gaffer role for 2012, ably assisted by Dr. 'he doesn't look concussed from where I'm standing' Kilbride, and Dave, Nate and Uarlinton making their league debuts. However, the most amazing change was learning that Mike McCormack had mastered that new technological wonder device called 'De Compooter' over the winter and was able to get his registration printed to allow him to play under the new rules instituted by the league (rumors suggestted he had help from Barry though).

And so to the game. The opening period was competitive and physical with the referee allowing many of the Allstars robust tackles go unpunished. The A’s weren’t ruffled and started to carve out some opportunities with Uarlinton, the returning Ian 'Torres' Sinclair and Canny all going close. Though the A’s had the majority of the possession, the Allstars were dangerous on the counter attack and but for a combination of Johno’s trademark, make yourself big goalkeeping and inaccurate finishing, the Kendall could have been at least a couple of goals down against the run of play. The Kendall did continue to threaten at the other end, with Paul Garvey 's attacking forays almost resulting in a goal but at half time it was remained 0-0.

Daz called for more of the same in the second half and the lads started positively. The back 4 of Kieran, Mike, Nick and Kenny were spraying the ball around confidently. Derrick and Baz’s direct running through the heart of the Allstars was causing all sorts of problems. Despite the Allstars conspiring to foul him at least 10 times with no card intervention from the referee, Derrick’s influence on the midfield was clear. Numerous chances came and went with Donal and Ronan going close with headers from corners and Iano’s low, well struck shot somehow pushed around the post by the impressive Allstars keeper.

The A’s continued to own the second half but couldn’t break the deadlock. Just as the game was looking to end in a stalemate, the Kendall got a free kick about 40 yards from goal. With players pilling forward, Kenny dropped a dangerous ball into the box with the hope that one of the lads would get a flick on. With the Allstars keeper rushing towards the ball, he completely misjudged the flight (apparently, he was looking at how big Daz’s bum has got since he became gaffer) resulting in the ball sailing over his flailing arms and into the net. A fortuitous goal but one richly deserved for the pereniel player of the year and renowned toastmaster.

The final few minutes were safely closed out by the Kendall before the final whistle blew. A win, a great team performance, a clean sheet and no bookings. If Carlsberg did first games of the season, then…....we’d probably all be sh*tfaced by 6pm.
