Another long trek south, this time to take on Whaling Port. We went into the last game of our inaugural season in 4th place, 3 points behind our opponent. Although they had a much better goal difference, we knew that any sort of win would see us finish 3rd, as the league uses head-to-head instead of goal difference to separate teams who are level on points. Our home game had seen a crazy 5-5 draw.

Somewhat of a skeleton crew of about 12 or so, bolstered by the arrival right at kick-off of Gerry Daly. Unfortunately, Gerry couldn’t get his boots on fast enough, so we started without him. It was all Kendall for the first 5 or 10 minutes, but as has happened before, we were undone by a ball over the top for a speedy forward to burst clear of the Gerry-less defense and finished impressively past a helpless Lar. We just had to put it behind us and get on with it. We continued to press forward, avoiding puddles, fallen trees, and sandy boxes. Lots of nice passing moves, but too often not able to get a clean strike, or we strayed offside. Eventually, just before the half, we won a free-kick on the edge of the box. As the home team tried to line up their wall, Gerry the old sly fox realized that the referee had never said to wait for his whistle, so stepped up and stroked the ball into the net. Referee awards the goal and bedlam ensues. Their ginormous keeper was incandescent with rage but the referee wasn’t having it and Gerry trotted off back to the half-way line for the restart.

The second half saw plenty of action too. We continued to press, and played some of our best football of the season, but could not find a way past the offside trap or the large, angry man in the opposition goal. Eventually, after about 75 minutes, Tomislav floated a nice ball over the top to Killer who beat the trap, pulled the ball down neatly and then struck it unerringly past the advancing Hagrid with his trusty left peg. Hagrid, true to form, was not happy and swore repeatedly at the ref about offside before finally going in the book. From there, it was a question of holding on and everyone busted a gut to contain the inevitable Whaling Port fightback. Zakhar was again impressive as a full-back and Steve, Ryan and Collie ran their balls off in midfield. After an eternity, the ref blew and we had our most hard-fought and satisfying win of the spring. A great way to round off our first season. We look forward to renewing acquaintances with Whaling Port in the fall.
